How a person’s body reacts and responds to external and internal stimuli is partially determined by genetics. Exercise, good nutrition, and stress management can help improve the body’s efficiency in dealing with its environment and daily tasks. Fitness professionals know how to program exercise routines and manage behaviours so their clients not only look and feel better, but actually achieve better overall health through improved mental and physical function.

The first step toward fitness is to assess one’s current health and fitness status. In this unit, you’ll learn about a number of fitness assessment techniques and identify the team members who may be involved in the assessment process.

When you complete this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Describe proper screening protocols
  • Identify common risk factors and signs and symptoms of disease
  • Identify limitations to exercise
  • Identify clients who are at risk for health problems, as well as those who require a medical clearance before participating in physical activity or testing
  • Describe the process of fitness testing and evaluation
  • Identify appropriate tests for measuring the components of physical fitness
  • Use the findings and data from the screening and evaluation process to develop a needs analysis
  • Help clients set short- and long-term goals and daily objectives
