You will learn how the muscles, bones, joints, and other body structures unite to get you moving. Physiology—how systems function and act—and kinesiology— how mechanics and anatomy relate to movement—will be presented in this unit, providing you with fuller insight into motion and movement.

When you complete this course study material, you’ll be able to:

  • Discuss Newton’s laws of motion as they relate to fitness and movement
  • Identify different types of muscles and their structures, including the attached connective tissue that holds the body together
  • Compare different types of bone and identify their role in movement
  • Explain how different types of joints allow for different types of movement
  • Identify factors that keep joints healthy and functioning properly
  • Understand the way the body uses levers to perform actions
  • Identify the different types of muscle fibers and their role in human movement
  • Discuss the physiology that drives a muscle contraction to produce force
  • Identify the different types of contractions the body uses to manage force
  • Describe the anaerobic and aerobic metabolic systems
  • Explain how ATP fuels muscles and how it’s formed from larger-energy nutrients for ongoing work
  • Explain how performance declines as the muscles fatigue
  • Explain the causes of muscular soreness and differentiate between soreness and muscle injury
  • Demonstrate how different factors affect the stability of the body
  • Understand how muscular fitness relates to the other health components of physical fitness and overall well-being
