Course Description:

This course introduces the fundamental principles of orthopedic medicine and musculoskeletal disorders, providing students with a comprehensive overview of common orthopedic conditions affecting the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and surrounding structures. The course emphasizes the clinical evaluation, assessment, and management of musculoskeletal injuries and diseases, integrating anatomical knowledge with orthopedic examination and imaging techniques.

Students will learn the principles of orthopedic patient assessment, including history taking, clinical examination, and interpretation of diagnostic investigations such as X-ray, CT, MRI, and bone scans. The course explores the classification and management of fractures, soft tissue injuries, and joint disorders, as well as inflammatory, metabolic, infectious, congenital, and developmental conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system.

The course also introduces orthopedic conditions affecting specific body regions including the spine, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle, and foot, and reviews common orthopedic procedures and surgical interventions used in clinical practice. Additional topics include bone tumors, neurovascular complications, orthopedic appliances, splints, and rehabilitation strategies used to restore function and mobility.

Through this course, students will develop a foundational understanding of orthopedic pathology, clinical presentation, clinical assessment , and treatment approaches, preparing them to recognize and understand common musculoskeletal disorders within a clinical or rehabilitative healthcare context.
