Course Description

The course is designed to teach neurology as it applies to branch of medicine dealing with disorders of nervous system. We will start with an introduction to basic terminology used in Neurology and functions of cranial nerves. In this course students will learn, about, monitoring and treatments of conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord, and the nerves. Topics included are the major neurological conditions (like Myasthenia Gravis, Muscular Dystrophy, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and sleep disorders), neurological trauma (such as head or spinal injuries, strokes, coma or brain surgery) and neuropathies (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome) and their impact on patient’s normal bodily functions and movements.  The overall goal is to provide the foundation for understanding the impairments of sensation, action and cognition that accompany injury, disease or dysfunction associated with central nervous system. 

Course Objectives

After completing the course, students will be able to: 

  • Relate terms used in neurology to their appropriate definitions and demonstrate clinical application of basic knowledge of the nervous system.
  • Understand pathology, etiology, diagnosis, management and prognosis for various neurological disorders like Myasthenia Gravis, Muscular Dystrophy, and Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, CVA, Carpal Tunnel syndrome, sleep disorders and coma.
  • Acquisition of the knowledge necessary for the diagnosis and initial management of common acute and chronic neurological conditions.
  • Take diagnostic approach for disorders associated with disease, dysfunction or injury of Central Nervous System.
  • Develop skills to demonstrate the ability to treat patients, provide medical care, awareness of behavioral issues.
  • Development of strategies for health promotion and prevention of neurological damage.
  • An understanding of the influence of family, community, and society in the care of people with neurological conditions.
  • Development of the attitudes and professional behaviors appropriate for clinical practice.
  • Demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate their methods of clinical practice, organize and record care, show an understanding of research methods, and improve patient care practices

METHODS OF ASSESSMENT

Will include any or all of the following with an 80/20 grading which may include:  Lesson exams, discussion boards, research project, final proctored  practical examination and will include 1 Course Defendable 3 hour Paper.
