COURSE DESCRIPTION
PMPC 202 lays the foundation for the scientific study of nutrition, with a focus on how nutrients affect human health across the lifespan. This course introduces the major classes of nutrients—carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water—while exploring their physiological roles, interactions, and impact on disease prevention and overall well-being.
Students will examine the digestive system and processes of absorption and metabolism, learning how food becomes fuel for the body. Special emphasis is placed on nutrition across the life cycle, including pregnancy, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and aging. The course also integrates principles of energy balance, fitness, and weight control, and considers the challenges of food safety, sustainability, and global nutrition.
