This course provides an overview on pathophysiology of different systems in humans for 1st year physical therapy students. No previous background in pathophysiology is necessary, but knowledge in medical terminology will be a plus. Students will learn about the pathology of common diseases encountered in physical therapist practice. Systems include immune, musculoskeletal, integumentary, endocrine and metabolic, cardiopulmonary, nervous, gastrointestinal (including hepatobiliary), hematologic, lymphatic, urinary and reproductive systems. Genetic, developmental, and nutritional disorders are also addressed. They will then apply the course concepts regarding selected health conditions, associated precautions, and intervention recommendations covered in this course to develop an appropriate medical management plan for patients. By taking this course, students will become familiar with pathophysiology as a science and gain a more in-depth knowledge about the mechanisms underlying diseases and their management as a basis for therapeutic program planning in physical therapy.
